WHO recommends boosters for certain groups

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) vaccine advisory panel has recommended that people who are immunocompromised or received an inactivated vaccine should be administered a booster dose.

Currently, many countries are administering booster shots to elderly people and people with underlying health conditions, as well as younger age cohorts in certain countries such as Ireland.

The WHO has consistently been opposed to booster vaccines and has recommended that they should instead be delivered to the developing world and that administering primary doses should be a priority.

This recommendation comes after the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on immunisation held a meeting on Tuesday to evaluate the necessity of booster doses.

SAGE chair Alejandro Cravioto stated that emerging data showed that vaccine efficacy against Covid-19 wanes, with a significant decline seen in the older population.

Director of the WHO’s immunisation department Kate O’Brien stated that wealthy countries may begin hoarding Covid-19 vaccines again as a result of the Omicron variant which would threaten global supplies.
