Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will always be facilitated in their communications of public health advice.
Martin said public health advice has always been central to the Government’s response to the pandemic, and the articulation of that advice will always be articulated.
He said at no stage will there be any effort to compromise the independence of that advice.
The Government agreed last week that as a matter of protocol, members of NPHET must now seek permission from the Government Press Office before doing media interviews to discuss the pandemic.
Martin said there is a need to coordinate and evaluate NPHET advice as there is sometimes a plethora of voices which may not be as helpful as it could be.
