Booster vaccines may not be needed as frequently going forward – McConkey

Professor Sam McConkey has stated that booster vaccines may not be needed as frequently going forward.

While speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, McConkey said, “I’d be reasonably optimistic that after the third dose, many of us will get waning immunity but immunity that wanes – for example – at a year or so.”

He made reference to the DPT vaccine, stating that “you get three of them, and then you don’t need another one until you’re five and then you don’t need anymore.”

He said that it will most likely be about one to two years when a booster vaccine will be required, however, he said that we probably could have done more in the last few months.

He said that individuals who were vaccinated in January/February should have received their booster in August/September/October.

However, he said that we “can’t change the past… now I think the booster campaign really is taking off and it’s up to scratch.”

McConkey also said that the booster should not only be available to those over 50 but to everyone who got their vaccine five or six months ago.
