Face masks ‘absolutely not required’ during PE or school yard breaks

Minister for Education Norma Foley has said it will be “absolutely not required” for children to wear face masks during PE or school breaks.

Schools and principals had expressed frustration that guidance they received had not answered these questions.

Minister Foley said further information will be issued to schools.

She said primary schools will adopt a practical approach over the next day or two when it comes to implementing the new restrictions.

Children in third class and up will be required to wear face masks at school, and can be refused entry if they do not comply.

The Department of Education has said schools can be flexible in their enforcement of the restrictions for the first few days.
