The rollout of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11 will begin on the 13th of December in the European Union which is earlier than previously planned.

Health Minister Jens Spahn stated, “Given the current pandemic situation, this is good news for parents and children. Many are awaiting this eagerly”.

According to a BioNTech spokesperson, the rollout will be brought forward without any impact on agreed delivery volumes thanks to “a massive effort including weekend work” on the part of Pfizer and BioNTech staff.

The pharmaceutical giant stated that their Comirnaty vaccine shows a 90.7% efficacy against Covid-19, according to a clinical trial of children aged 5-11 years old.

The European Medicines Agency stated, “The benefits of Comirnaty in children aged 5 to 11 outweigh the risks, particularly in those with conditions that increase the risk of severe Covid-19”.
