Travellers without pre-travel Covid test required to enter Mandatory Hotel Quarantine

Travellers who don’t present a pre-travel Covid test will be required to enter Mandatory Hotel Quarantine under new laws passed by the Government this week.

This follows confirmation that all people arriving in Ireland will need a negative Covid-19 test from Friday.

This includes people from the UK and EU and will require either a professional antigen test to be taken no longer than 48 hours before arrival or a PCR 72 hours before arrival.

These new measures have been imposed in response to the Covid-19 variant Omicron, which was initially reported in South Africa.

The Cabinet has also approved new powers for Health Minister Stephen Donnelly which will be similar to the ones imposed before the last virus wave, however, Donnelly will be given the authority to set out alternative arrangements for those who arrive in the country without a valid pre-travel test.

Some of these alternatives may include post-arrival testing without entering quarantine.
