999 callers’ details recorded incorrectly – Report

An independent report which is investigating the cancellation of 999 calls made to Gardaí has found that callers’ details were not correctly recorded with Gardaí being sent to the wrong locations.

The interim review which was commissioned by the Policing Authority found that the supervision, quality control and procedures for managing people were either not followed, were ineffective or weak.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will be questioned about the report at a public meeting of the Policing Authority this afternoon.

The investigation began after it was reported that over 200,000 calls between the years 2019 and 2020 were improperly cancelled.

According to Harris, their investigation had found just two incidents of particular concern, however, the Policing Authority commissioned its own independent report on the matter.

The report found that incidents, where information provided by callers was not accurately recorded, meant Gardaí were dispatched to the wrong locations.

The report does not specify how often this happened.

Some Gardaí who had been sent to answer the calls were also found to have asked the dispatchers to cancel incidents, which would avoid a follow-up.
