More restrictions may be needed before Christmas but Government will try avoid lockdown – Varadkar

Leo Varadkar has said further restrictions may be needed before Christmas as Ireland’s Covid-19 hospitalisations remain high.

He said case numbers are starting to plateau in Ireland.

He said it would be a big mistake for Government to impose restrictions in the coming days to find out the country has already turned a corner.

The Tánaiste stressed the Government does not want to impose further strict restrictions.

Varadkar said: “I think we may need more restrictions heading into the Christmas period but I don’t think we need to be fatalistic about a return to any form of lockdown or even a ‘lockdown light’, and I think we should try to avoid that.”

He further said behaviour changes people have been making in recent weeks have contributed to the reduction in the spread of the virus, as well as the vaccine booster programme.
