Biden administration invites Taiwan to democracy summit

The Biden administration has invited Taiwan to next month’s “Summit for Democracy” in a move that is likely to provoke China which has consistently seen the island as its own territory.

This gathering will be a test of President Joe Biden’s assertion that he would return the United States to global leadership to face down authoritarian forces.

The virtual event, which will be held on the 9th and 10th of December, will include 110 participants, including Ireland, to help stop democratic backsliding and the erosion of rights and freedoms worldwide.

According to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the Government would be represented by Digital Minister Audrey Tang and Hsiao Bi-khim with the ministry adding, “Our country’s invitation to participate in the ‘Summit for Democracy’ is an affirmation of Taiwan’s efforts to promote the values of democracy and human rights over the years”.

China’s Foreign Ministry firmly opposed their invitation as China steps up pressure on countries to destroy relations with self-governed Taiwan.

A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian stated, “US actions only go to show democracy is just a cover and a tool for it to advance its geopolitical objectives, oppress other countries, divide the world and serve its own interests”.
