“You don’t only have rights, you have obligations”, Austrian Chancellor defends vaccine mandate

Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg has defended the Government’s decision of introducing a vaccine mandate by the 1st of February next year.

Austria has entered a nationwide lockdown as a result of surging Covid-19 cases, being one of the most dramatic restrictions seen in Western Europe for months, as non-essential retail, restaurants and Christmas markets have closed.

Defending the vaccine mandate, Chancellor Schallenberg stated, “We have 66% of the population so far which has got the vaccine – this is too little too late”.

He added, “I am sorry we have to go this way, I would rather have it the other way and we have done ten months of campaigning, of trying to persuade people, but still we have a certain share – nearly one-third of the population – which is hesitant”.

He said that we are in this together as a society while stating, “If you’re in a society you don’t only have rights, you have obligations and if you neglect these obligations then they become compulsory sooner or later.”

Plans have yet to be finalised for the vaccine mandate but it’s understood that those who do not receive the vaccine will be fined.
