Dutch police make 21 arrests following fourth night of unrest

Dutch police have made 21 arrests following a fourth night of unrest that has been brought about by newly introduced Covid-19 measures.

Although the situation has calmed down, groups caused unrest in Zwolle, Groningen and Roosendaal.

Police arrested 13 people in Zwolle amid concerns that a riot was being planned by the group.

According to broadcaster RTL, the suspects were detained for possession of fireworks, disobeying police orders and having no ID.

In the town of Roosendaal, eight people were arrested including three for setting fires.

Gangs of youths were also broken up by police in Groningen yesterday, a day after protests broke out in the city.

Over 150 people have now been arrested across the Netherlands during protests against Covid-19 measures which were implemented on the 13th of November.

Severe unrest broke out in the port city of Rotterdam on Friday when four people were shot by police during an incident with stone-throwing rioters.

Five police officers were injured after being pelted with fireworks and stones by rioters, who also set fire to bikes.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that he understood the “tension in society” but said, “I will never accept that idiots use pure violence”.

He warned that further measures will be imposed if there are no signs of cases falling.
