First known death from flu since start of the pandemic reported

The first known death from the flu has been reported in Ireland since the start of the pandemic.

No cases of the flu were recorded last winter which can be attributed to lockdowns and Covid-19 measures that are believed to have halted any opportunity for the virus to begin circulating.

In the week to November 14th, one flu-related death was reported with a further case of the virus being diagnosed involving the A(H3) strain which particularly impacts older people.

No patients with the flu have been admitted to hospital or critical care so far this winter, however, overall flu levels in Ireland are very low.

However, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) continues to be the dominant respiratory virus amongst children in Ireland, placing pressure on three Dublin children’s hospitals.

In relation to the A9(H3) strain, the European Centre for Disease Control stated that it could place a great burden on the health system which is already under immense pressure from Covid-19.
