Auckland lockdown to end as New Zealand attempts new approach

Bars, restaurants and gyms will be permitted to reopen in Auckland from early December as New Zealand’s capital city emerges from a long lockdown.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said customers will be required to show proof they have been fully vaccinated.

The announcement ends a lockdown that has been in place since August.

It further signals a new approach being taken by the New Zealand Government, requiring people to show proof of vaccination.

Ardern said the country will move towards a traffic light system based around the use of vaccine passes from December 2nd.

Approximately 83% of New Zealanders aged 12 and over are fully vaccinated but the rate in some health districts is as low as 73%.
