Progress made in Northern Ireland trade negotiations – EU

Vice President of the European Commission Maroš Šefcovic has said progress has been made in talks between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Šefcovic said solutions can be found if the UK redoubles its efforts.

“We had some progress on Friday,” Šefcovic said.

“I’m sure that if Frost and the UK would double their efforts. we can resolve all the outstanding issues to the satisfaction of the people of Northern Ireland,” he said.

Brexit Minister David Frost has threatened to trigger Article 16 over the past few weeks as negotiations became tense.

Triggering Article 16 could likely trigger a trade war between the UK and EU.

Šefcovic last week welcomed a change in tone from the UK, and called for the tone change to translate into negotiations.
