NPHET do not want to advise Government to introduce another lockdown

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) does not want to advise the Government to introduce another lockdown, according to NPHET member Dr. Cillian de Gascun.

De Gascun, who is also the Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory at UCD, stated that public health measures will have less of an impact than they had at the start of the pandemic due to the Delta variant.

With 5,959 cases reported today along with 640 hospitalisations, 121 of which in ICU, de Gascun said that the most vulnerable in society will have to be protected.

While speaking on Newstalk, he stated that NPHET will be meeting the Government again this week while adding, “We obviously don’t want to go back to lockdown because we know that there are very negative outcomes associated with that.”

Although NPHET does not want the country to enter another lockdown, de Gascun stated, “But at the same time, we need to protect our health service, we need to protect society and we need to save as many lives as we can”.
