‘Naive’ to think vaccines would be enough against Covid-19 – NPHET

Member of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory Dr. Cillian de Gasgun has stated that it was “naive” to think that vaccines would be enough against Covid-19.

He stated that Ireland was on a  “very concerning and worrying trajectory” with the Delta variant “not quite as susceptible to the vaccine” as originally thought.

He told Newstalk that this combined with the waning vaccine efficacy has put the country on its current path.

“I think we all thought that when we saw the effectiveness of the vaccines that we’d be in a better position, and maybe that was a little bit, I suppose, naive if we look back on it”.

He added that we had to go with the data that was available at the time and that we were dealing primarily with a different virus.

He acknowledged that it was fair to have concerns if similar hopes have now been placed on the boosters.

“I think it’s a valid fear. And I think the challenge with Covid over the last couple of years is that nobody can tell you what’s going to happen.”
