HSE confirms 4,400 healthcare staff absent due to Covid-19

HSE chief Paul Reid has confirmed that 4,400 healthcare staff are absent either because they have Covid-19 or are deemed as symptomatic close contacts.

Reid said that despite hiring 11,000 nurses, staff shortages remain a prominent issue for the healthcare service.

This comes as healthcare unions are insisting that members not be excluded from the five-day rule, which requires people to isolate for five days if a member of a household tests positive for Covid-19.

Reid spoke on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland where he said the health service would engage with unions to address their concerns.

Reid also stated that the situation is less serious than it was prior to the vaccine roll-out and added that the booster campaign will provide further protection for healthcare staff.

This comes as Reid urges hospitals to prioritise Covid-19 care and urgent time-sensitive non-Covid patients over the next two weeks while stating, “This may necessitate curtailing all other activity to facilitate redeployment of staff to critical care areas.”
