Risk of Covid-19 reinfection low for more than 12 months – HIQA

According to the latest assessment by the Health Information and Quality Act (HIQA), the risk of someone who had Covid-19 getting reinfected is low for more than 12 months.

However, some evidence suggests that the duration/extent of immunity may be lower in older people as well as patients with chronic kidney disease and immunocompromising conditions.

Despite the evidence suggesting that post-infection immunity lasts longer than 12 months, HIQA decided not to change its initial figure of nine months.

The group advised that because the studies were observational and carried out during periods of strict public health measures and less transmissible variants than the Delta, there may be “limited generalisation” to the current context.

Members of the group said that despite the evidence being “encouraging”, extending the duration beyond nine months “may raise the risk of infection”.

While saying that additional protection provided by the vaccine should be communicated to the public, the group added, “In addition, there should be clear messaging that natural immunity does not provide absolute protection from reinfection.”
