Poland detains 100 migrants at Belarusian border, accuses Belarus of leading operation

The Polish army has detained approximately 100 migrants at the Belarusian border while accusing Belarus of leading the operation.

This comes as Belarus prepares its first repatriation flight for migrants to Iraq which will have 200 and 300 people on board.

The Polish defence ministry said that Belarusian forces had carried out initial reconnaissance and most likely damaged barbed wire fencing along the border.

It added, “Then the Belarusians forced the migrants to throw stones at Polish soldiers to distract them. The attempt to cross the border took place several hundred metres away”.

A group of about 100 migrants were then detained following the incident near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne.

Yesterday, the press service for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the leader was speaking to Chancellor Angela Merkel on the crisis in recent days and “agreed that the problem as a whole will be brought up to the level of Belarus and the EU.”

It added, “Relevant officials, to be determined from both sides, will immediately start negotiations to resolve the existing problems”.

An EU spokesman said that there were “technical talks” and urged Minsk to grant humanitarian access to the border area.

According to Aid groups, 11 migrants have died at the border since the crisis began in the summer.
