Steve Bannon surrenders to face contempt charges

Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon has surrendered to authorities to face contempt of Congress charges after refusing to give evidence about the Capitol riot.

Bannon defied a summons to testify on his knowledge of a protest, which resulted in people storming the US Capitol.

On Friday, Bannon was formally charged by the justice department.

He now faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $100,000.

Speaking on his way into the building, Bannon said: “We’re taking down the Biden regime every day.”

According to subpoena documents, Bannon – who hosts a podcast called War Room – said on the evening before January 6th that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow”.

His lawyers have argued that his communications with Donald Trump are protected.
