Lockdown for unvaccinated not being looked at – Taoiseach

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has stated that Ireland is not looking at the implementation of a lockdown solely for the unvaccinated.

This comes as Austria implements a lockdown for the unvaccinated from today in an attempt to stop the surge of Covid-19 cases.

However, Martin stated that the situation in Austria is much different to Ireland’s as 75.3% of the Irish population is fully vaccinated, whereas 64.4% of Austria’s population is fully vaccinated.

Although describing the situation as serious, Martin said that the vaccination levels meant the country was in a much different position to last year.

He added that there were three elements to efforts to contain the virus – vaccine boosters, antigen testing and behaviour.

He also said that he would support the subsidisation of antigen tests to make them more affordable to people.

It’s also understood that the Cabinet Covid Committee would consider NPHET’s advice on extending the use of the Covid-19 vaccine pass.
