From tomorrow, Austria will be ordering millions of unvaccinated people into lockdown from tomorrow to deal with the surge in Covid-19 cases, according to Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg.
Describing Austria’s vaccination rate as “shamefully low”, Schallenburg announced the new measures after a video call with the governors of Austria’s nine provinces. He stated, “We must raise the vaccination rate”.
With approximately 65% of Austria’s 8.9 million population fully vaccinated, the country’s vaccination rate has been described as the lowest in Western Europe.
Additionally, Vienna will be administering the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to children aged 5 to 12 years old from tomorrow.
This will make Vienna the first European region to vaccinate children this young as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has not yet approved the vaccine to be used in kids aged 5 to 11.
New measures in Vienna also include a negative PCR test no older than 48 hours being presented to avail of indoor dining for fully vaccinated and individuals fully recovered from the virus.
