Pope Francis thanks journalists for helping expose Catholic Church sex scandals

Pope Francis has issued his thanks to journalists who helped uncover the Catholic Church sex scandals.

Offering his praise to what he described as the “mission” of journalism, the Pope said that it was vital for reporters to get outside of the newsroom and discover what’s happening in the outside world to counter online misinformation.

“Thank you for what you tell us about what is wrong in the Church, for helping us not to sweep it under the carpet, and for the voice you have given to the abuse victims”.

The Pope was speaking at a ceremony to honour Philip Pullella of Reuters and Valentina Alazraki of Mexico’s Noticieros Televisa for the work they achieved covering the Vatican.

Emerging in 2002, the uncovering of the sex abuse scandals rocked the Catholic Church. The most recent investigation in the French Catholic Church found that over 200,000 children were abused over the past 70 years.

In the year 2018, Pope Francis addressed his past mistakes following criticism that he responded too slowly to the scandals upon becoming Pope.

He stated that he was wrong about a case in Chile and pledged that the Church would never again seek to cover up such scandals.
