Counter-terrorism police investigate fatal blast at Liverpool hospital

Counter-terrorism police are currently investigating an explosion at a hospital in Liverpool where one person was killed and another injured.

Police responded to reports of an explosion involving a vehicle, which is believed to have been a taxi, at Liverpool Women’s Hospital at 10:59am.

The scene was attended by police officers along with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Regional Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for Merseyside police stated, “So far we understand that the car involved was a taxi which pulled up at the hospital shortly before the explosion occurred.”

“We are keeping an open mind as to what caused the explosion, but given how it has happened – out of caution – counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police.”

Video footage is circulating online of the incident where a number of explosions are heard with smoke billowing out of the hospital.

Images also show the vehicle on fire and later burnt out.
