Labour party leader Alan Kelly has called for the whole country to be administered the booster vaccine jab at the opening of his party conference in Dublin.
Acknowledging that the situation regarding Covid-19 was difficult, Kelly said that the Government was not using every tool in its armoury as it meets next week to consider its response to the surge in Covid-19 cases.
“We need to use every tool in our armoury. And a second tool we need to use is booster vaccines. I believe with the infrastructure we’ve put in, we should boost the whole country.”
He stated that it was “ridiculous” that NPHET didn’t recommend widespread antigen testing last year while adding that the country had well in excess of 15 or 16 million vaccines.
He added that the vast quantity of doses available in the country means we meet COVAX commitments even after booster shots are made available to anyone who wants one.
Currently, booster vaccine doses are only available to those over the age of 60 years old as well as those who are immunocompromised; and healthcare workers are expected to be next.
