BREXIT: Protests to take place along Northern Ireland border over UK’s handling of protocol

Protests are scheduled to take place along the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic over the UK’s handling of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The protests will take place next week with demonstrators asking UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “back off” on plans to trigger Article 16.

The protest group ‘Border Communities Against Brexit’ will stage demonstrations at five different locations along the border to support the protocol.

It accused the British Government of creating trade barriers between itself and Northern Ireland which they said has damaged the peace process.

Chairman Damian McGinnity stated, “Recent British government statements and actions are posing a very direct threat to the peace process, the all-island economy and raising once again the horrific prospect of a return to a hard border in Ireland.”

“We are calling on Boris Johnson to back off, and to protect and implement the protocol.”

He added that many in Northern Ireland believe that the protocol is working and has protected the region from the worst impacts of Brexit.
