Austria prepares for lockdown for unvaccinated and those who recovered from Covid-19

Austria’s government announced that it wanted to impose a lockdown for the unvaccinated and people who have recovered from Covid-19 as the country’s vaccination rate stands at 65%, which Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg described as “shamefully low”.

Salzburg and upper Austria states have already planned to lockdown unvaccinated individuals from Monday.

During a press conference, Schallenberg stated, “The aim is clear: we want on Sunday to give the green light for a nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated”.

Before being rolled out, the measure will have to be signed off by parliament and a meeting of the heads of regional governments over the weekend.

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig stated that city authorities would also be introducing extra measures to “keep in check … the dangerous development” of the infection rates of the city.

Among the measures include vaccinating children aged between 5 and 11 years old from Monday which will make Vienna the first EU region to vaccinate this age group.

Vienna residents will also be allowed to receive a booster vaccine four months after their second dose instead of six months.

In order to attend events in the city where there are more than 25 people in attendance, or to go to bars and restaurants, proof of vaccination or recovery will be required along with the results of a PCR test no more than 48 hours old.
