Taoiseach says he does not anticipate lockdowns over Christmas this year

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he does not anticipate any lockdowns this Christmas as Covid-19 cases rise.

Martin was questioned on the National Public Health Emergency Team’s (NPHET) meeting, where a full return to working from home is being considered.

The Taoiseach was questioned whether Ireland will see further restrictions being implemented over the Christmas period.

Martin replied by saying the reopening of society, combined with the more transmissible Delta variant, is causing the very high case numbers, which he said is concerning.

However, he noted that Ireland is in a much different position now as a result of vaccinations, saying that if Ireland didn’t have vaccinations now, the country would be in lockdown.

“I don’t see a dramatic going back or turning to where we were,” he said.

Asked about the possibilities of a lockdown over Christmas, Martin responded: “I don’t see Christmas lockdowns, no.

“But we may have to imaginatively look at how we behave and how we manage events and so on.”
