Covid-19 pill will not replace vaccines – O’Neill

Leading Immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill stated that although the results from the Pfizer Covid-19 pill are remarkable, he said that they will not replace vaccines.

Trials for the antiviral were cut early after it was revealed that the pill was 89% effective at preventing the risk of hospitalisation and death.

While speaking on the Pat Kenny Show, O’Neill said that the trial finishing early was a great sign, “That means it’s working during the trial.”

He said that there are plenty of advantages to having such pills available to treat the virus but warned that we haven’t seen the full data yet.

When the pill is taken within three days of symptoms, the risk of hospitalisation and death is reduced by 89%, however, efficacy is slightly diminished once taken five days after symptoms.

Although effective and easier to manufacture than vaccines, O’Neill said, “The vaccine is the safest bet.”

He also said that “Prevention is always better than cure. We’re not going to be saying replace the vaccines with this.”

He added, “As we now know, if you’re vaccinated there is a risk of infection. If you’re vaccinated and test positive… take the antiviral. It’s like a belt and braces job.”
