Poland has warned that an armed escalation will be implemented at its border with Belarus as thousands of migrants attempt to enter the country.
The illegal entry of migrants into the EU is believed to be encouraged by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in retaliation for sanctions imposed on the country by the EU.
The Belarusian government has been accused of orchestrating a migrant influx and using migrants as political pawns, which has led to the EU calling for fresh sanctions.
With Poland deploying soldiers to manage the migrant influx at the border, a razor-wire fence has also been constructed, with social media footage showing migrants cutting through the fence.
Lawmakers have also approved a €350 million wall to be constructed on the border to prevent migrants from entering the country.
With many migrants attempting to flee war and poverty, they have been left stranded at the border as Belarusian soldiers prevent them from returning to Belarus while Polish soldiers prevent them from entering Poland.
Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller reported that a further 3,000 to 4,000 migrants were flocking at the border.
“We expect that there may be an escalation of this type of action on the Polish border in the near future, which will be of an armed nature”.
