Michelle O’Neill cites human rights concerns over vaccine mandates while favouring voluntary approach

Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland Michelle O’Neill has criticised the potential incorporation of vaccine mandates citing human rights concerns while favouring a voluntary approach to the vaccine.

This comes as the UK announces vaccine mandates for frontline healthcare workers to which Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said such a policy is not required in the country.

O’Neill said that she would consider a proposal for vaccine mandates being issued to healthcare workers while adding, “We’re yet to receive that advice from the Health Minister Robin Swann here, but certainly I will engage with him on the issue”.

In regards to vaccine mandates, O’Neill said “I think mandatory vaccines are obviously something that is always going to come with its human rights concerns and others, so we have to take a decision based on having all that information.”

Stormont Executive continues to play host to discussions over mandatory vaccine passports being introduced for entry to hospitality venues.

The Executive has advised venues to carry out Covid entry checks and an official app developed to accommodate proof of an individual’s vaccine status.

However, making the passport a legal requirement has divided Stormont with the SDLP and Alliance Party calling for legally enforceable Covid-19 passports for nightlife venues.
