Health authorities in Frances have advised against the use of the Moderna vaccine for those under 30 following rare risks of cardiac inflammation that’s associated with mRNA vaccines.
A study from Epi-Phare looked at all people between the ages of 12 to 50 years old who were hospitalised due to the heart conditions myocarditis and pericarditis.
The results of the study found that vaccines from both Moderna and Pfizer increased the risk of developing the conditions within seven days of vaccination.
The research group, which noted that cases are rare, revealed that the risk is higher in men under the age of 30, particularly after the second Moderna dose which accounted for 132 cases of myocarditis per million doses administered.
The risk of pericarditis was also greater after a second dose of the Moderna vaccine in people under 30 years old with 18 cases per one million doses.
Head of Epi-Phare Mahmoud Zureik stated, “When you measure the effectiveness of vaccines against severe cases of Covid-19 against the risks that exist but are rare… the value of vaccines is not in doubt”.
