Germany’s Covid-19 infection rate hits record high

Germany’s Covid-19 infection rate has hit a record high as officials describe the situation as the “pandemic of the unvaccinated”.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, Germany has seen 201.1 new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 residents over the past seven days which is above last year’s record of 197.6.

The Robert Koch Institute, which is the country’s disease control centre, said that there have been 15,513 new cases reported over the past 24 hours and although this is down from Friday’s figure of 37,120, it must be noted that figures are typically lower after the weekend.

Approximately 67% of Germany’s population of 83 million people is fully vaccinated which officials have stated is not enough.

There are now nationwide calls for free rapid tests to be reintroduced with officials asking everyone who got their initial vaccine shots six months ago or more to get the booster vaccine.
