Biden vaccine mandate for businesses suspended by US court

US President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate for businesses has been suspended by the US Court of Appeals.

The mandate was introduced to push millions of employees at businesses where there are more than 100 workers to get vaccinated.

The court cited petitioners concerns who believe “there are grave statutory and constitutional issues with the Mandate, the Mandate is hereby stayed pending further action by this court.”

Petitioners included Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Utah and Mississippi, as well as private companies and religious groups.

The court ordered the government to reply to the motion for permanent injunction by 5pm on Monday.

Although there has been no immediate reaction from the Biden administration, Texas Governor Greg Abbott voiced his support for the mandate while applauding the decision in a Twitter post, “We will have our day in court to strike down Biden’s unconstitutional abuse of authority.”

If the suspension is upheld, it would represent a significant setup to one of Biden’s most far-reaching and high-impact efforts to secure widespread immunisation ahead of the winter period when a resurgence of the virus is expected.
