Much more expanded booster campaign is to be expected – Harris

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has stated that a more expanded booster vaccine campaign will be expected for the general population.

Currently, booster vaccines are being administered to those over 60 years old, however, the expansion of the campaign will be based on medical advice.

Harris told The Hard Shoulder, “I think there’s three parts to it: I think there’s the rollout of the booster campaign, over-60s now starting, healthcare workers.”

Harris added that better use of antigen testing and people continuing to use “cop on” will also contribute.

With a surge in Covid-19 cases triggering concerns in health officials and politicians, speculation suggests that booster vaccines may be rolled out to a broader spectrum of the population that goes beyond immunocompromised, healthcare workers and over-60s.

In regards to the surge in Covid-19 cases, Harris stated that although case numbers are rising, hospitalisations are not, which he said is worrying but simultaneously there are “some signs for optimism.”

“It’s kind of a peculiar situation – the case numbers very very high – the case numbers are clearly rising.”

With case numbers rising but hospitalisations and ICU numbers reducing, there is a significantly low conversion in the high number of cases in regards to people becoming seriously ill from Covid-19.
