Healthcare workers in Greece protest against mandatory vaccines

Healthcare workers in Greece have taken to the streets of Athens to protest against their profession being subject to mandatory vaccines.

This comes a day after the government imposed further restrictions on those who were unvaccinated following a surge in infections, hospital admissions and deaths.

Hundreds of healthcare workers gathered outside the parliament building to protest against regulations that call for unvaccinated health staff to be suspended from their jobs.

Health unions have stated that they’re not opposed to vaccines but are opposed to them being mandatory.

Greece has made it compulsory for those who work in the healthcare sector and care homes to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The country’s Health Minister Thanos Plevris said stricter measures would be imposed as of Saturday for all unvaccinated people in Greece.

Anyone who doesn’t present a vaccine certificate or proof of recovery from Covid-19 will need a negative PCR test or rapid test, conducted at their own cost, in order to gain access to facilities such as banks, public services, shops, hair salons and entertainment venues.

Public and private sector employees will be required to take two tests per week to enter their workplace.
