Minneapolis votes against disbanding Police Force following George Floyd killing

Minneapolis voters have voted against replacing the police force with a new department, eighteen months after the killing of George Floyd.

More than 56% of voters rejected a ballot asking residents if they wanted to create a new Department of Public Safety to take the place of the police department.

In May 2020, George Floyd was killed after police officer Derek Chauvin pinned his knee against the neck of Floyd for more than ten minutes.

Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years in prison in June.

Three other officers charged in Floyd’s death face trial in March.

There was a call from certain activists following the killing to reform the police department.
