Armed Support Unit intervene following three-hour stand-off at Limerick house

A man has been arrested following a three-hour stand-off with gardaí in Limerick which eventually resulted in the involvement of the Armed Support Unit.

The man had allegedly barricaded himself inside a house and had access to weapons shortly before 7pm yesterday evening.

The house was located on Main Street in Abbeyfeale with gardaí responding to the scene at around 7pm.

Upon the arrival of gardaí, the man was threatening to harm himself and anyone who attempted to enter the premises.

According to a Garda statement, the man didn’t have access to firearms but to domestic knives and tools.

Garda negotiators attempted to speak with the man during the stand-off. At this point, An Garda Síochána’s Operational Command protocol was implemented and an On-Scene Commander was appointed with negotiators from the National Negotiators Unit in Limerick.

Members of the Armed Support Unit from Limerick and Cork were also deployed to the scene.

The Armed Support Unit had intervened at approximately 10pm and arrested the man under the Criminal Damage Act 1991.

Gardaí stated that the man was medically assessed at the scene and taken to Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick where he is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
