Stephen Donnelly proposes extending Covid-19 emergency legislation until February 9th

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has announced proposals in relation to extending Covid-19 emergency legislation until the 9th of February amid concerns “that things will deteriorate further”.

The emergency legislation, which is due to expire on the 9th of November, that Donnelly is proposing to be extended is legislation providing for face masks, Covid passes, enforcement powers and fixed penalty notices.

He said that he couldn’t predict the trajectory of the disease with certainty.

Opposing the extensions, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson David Cullinane said that the circumstances which allowed the legislation to be initially introduced have changed.

He added that he was opposed to extending the emergency powers nearly two years into the pandemic and that the time had come for them to be no longer necessary.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated earlier that there were no guarantees that Covid-19 restrictions would be re-introduced while saying that the rise in cases at the moment was “very concerning”.

With the use of antigen testing increasing, Martin said if people “collectively remain cautious we can avoid the need to have a backward return to restrictions”.
