COP26: Nations vow to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030

Over 80 countries have signed an agreement – pushed by the US and EU – to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen said cutting the powerful greenhouse gas would “immediately slow down climate change”.

She said approximately 30% of global warming since the Industrial Revolution is due to methane.

von der Leyen said: “Today, global methane emissions grow faster than at any time in the past.”

“It is the lowest hanging fruit.”

Nearly 90 countries have joined a US and EU-led effort to slash emissions of methane by 2030.

Methane is shorter lived in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, but is 80 times more potent at warming the earth.

Cutting the levels of the gas in the atmosphere is one of the most effective ways of preventing climate change.
