WATCH: Emmanuel Macron claims Australian PM lied over submarine deal

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he knows that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison lied to France over submarine deal.

When asked by a reporter if he believes Scott Morrison lied to him, Macron replied: “I don’t think, I know.”

Australia cancelled a $37 billion deal to build twelve submarines, and instead negotiated a new defence pact with the US and the UK – known as AUKUS.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison denies that he was dishonest to the French.

The French and Australian leaders met at the G20 summit in Rome for the first time since the row escalated.

Macron was asked whether he could trust Morrison again, to which he replied: “We will see what he will deliver.”

“I have a lot of respect for your country. I have a lot of respect and a lot of friendship for your people. I just say when we have respect, you have to be true and you have to behave in line and consistently with this value.”
