India announces target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that his country will reach net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2070.

Being among the biggest polluters in the world, India’s targets exceed necessary expectations for deterring global warming by two decades.

Mr. Modi defended India for sticking to its climate pledges “in spirit and letter” while noting that his country contained 17% of the world’s population but was responsible for only 5% of global emissions.

The third-biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses only last week rejected calls to announce a net-zero carbon emissions target, saying that it was more important for the world to lay out pathways to reduce emissions.

What sets India aside from most countries regarding net-zero targets is that its target surpasses the preferred year of 2050 by 20 years, with the US, Britain, and the European Union setting targets of being net-zero by the year 2050.

China and Saudi Arabia fall short of India’s target by ten years, setting targets to be net-zero by 2060. Critics have labelled these targets as meaningless unless tangible action is taken now.

Scientists say that global emissions must be reduced by 50% by 2030 and be net-zero by 2050 in order to deter the worst effects of climate change.

Mr. Modi stated, “Instead of mindless and destructive consumption we need mindful and deliberate utilisation,”.

He added, “These choices, made by billions of people, can take the fight against climate change one step further,”.
