COVID-19: Hundreds of flights cancelled following outbreak in China

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at airports throughout China as the country tackles an outbreak of Covid-19.

China has been incorporating a zero-tolerance approach of border closures, targeted lockdowns and long quarantine periods.

However, despite its efforts, China is now dealing with a new outbreak of the virus which has already resulted in the postponement of the Wuhan Marathon and Beijing Marathon.

The flare-ups, which have been linked to tourists, have resulted in stay-at-home orders being issued to millions.

Officials have also ramped up testing and restricted inter-provincial travel to halt the continuing spread of the outbreak.

Officials are concerned about outbreaks as Beijing is to host the Winter Olympics this year.

Although case numbers have remained relatively low, authorities have placed tens of thousands in Beijing under lockdown to keep the cases under control.

Many regions throughout China are demanding that passengers present a negative test before they’re granted entry, particularly cities with recently reported cases.

Approximately half of all flights at Beijing’s two main airports were cancelled as officials remain cautious of outbreaks in other parts of China.
