WATCH: Unvaccinated people are “disproportionately” represented in ICU – Glynn

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn has stated that unvaccinated people are “disproportionately represented” in ICU, citing that 58% of those who are in ICU are unvaccinated.

While speaking at a briefing, Glynn said that the current trajectory of Covid-19 in Ireland is not good for the coming days and weeks.

With 1,631 new cases of Covid-19 being confirmed in Ireland today, Glynn said that it may seem like an improvement but it’s not unexpected when you consider the bank holiday weekend and that there may be a significant increase in the coming days.

With the growth rate being approximately 1% and 3% per day, Glynn said that the country is currently not in a position to enforce county-wide lockdowns.

Both Glynn and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan have asked the public to conduct personal risk assessments before engaging in higher-risk activities.

Glynn stated, “If you’re going to a nightclub, think about think about the other activities that you’re engaging in in the days after that,”.

“If your children are going on playdates or engaging in sport, think about all of the other activities they’re engaging in and just see do they need to be engaging in everything that they’re engaging in, given how high incidence is in the country at the moment.”

Holohan added that Covid-19 infection is now growing at a rate that is concerning NPHET with 101 people being treated in ICU.

In regards to ICU figures, Holohan said NPHET had a “substantial” concern about the number of ICU beds being taken up by Covid-19 patients because, in typical circumstances, these beds would normally be used for individuals who cannot get access to surgeries or interventions.

Holohan also warned that vaccinated people still faced risks with Covid-19 despite being “substantially reduced”.

“Just because everything is open doesn’t mean we all have to do them or that we all have to do them at the same time,”.
