Many countries reintroduce restrictions as cases surge throughout Europe

Many countries throughout Europe have begun the reintroduction of restrictions as Covid-19 cases begin to surge across the continent while it enters its second Covid winter.

Many countries have reported case numbers that haven’t been seen for several months while countries with lower vaccine coverage are struggling with spiralling death rates.

Latvia was the first country to reimpose tough Covid-19 restrictions as it deals with a spike in cases amid low vaccination uptake.

The government implemented a night curfew, closed schools, restaurants and entertainment venues for a month starting last from last week.

Tougher restrictions have also been imposed in Romania and Czech Republic while Slovakia has expanded its restrictions to more regions.

From Monday, police in the Balkan region will begin imposing fines on people who breach Covid-19 restrictions.

With 574 people dying from Covid-19 in Romania last week, the government has ordered the closure of schools for two weeks, the reintroduction of night curfews and vaccine passes are now mandatory for most public venues.

The Belgian government has also reintroduced restrictions which include extending mask-wearing in public places as well as for staff in bars, restaurants and fitness clubs.

The UK reported its highest daily death toll since March with 263 deaths with 8,693 patients in hospital.

Ireland reported 1,631 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday with 503 patients in hospital and 101 being treated in ICU.

Europe now accounts for 55% of all new cases globally with deaths also on the rise. However, over 30% of Europe’s deaths are being reported in Russia which has reported 1,051 deaths on average every day.
