Majority of people want Dublin street fully pedestrianised, according to survey

A new survey has revealed that the majority of people want Capel Street in Dublin City Centre to become fully pedestrianised.

The survey revealed that eight in ten people were in favour of pedestrianising the street after temporary changes were made during the summer to accommodate for outdoor dining.

As a result of making room for outdoor dining, a section of the street was traffic-free and buildouts were also installed to provide space for restaurants and hospitality businesses.

The trial, which was conducted by Dublin City Council, saw the closure of Capel Street and Parliament Street to vehicles on weekend evenings since June.

A three-week public consultation on the traffic-free trial of the two streets was launched in August which gathered nearly 7,000 respondents.

The results were published this week and revealed that 79% of people want the street to be traffic-free.

94% of respondents stated that Capel Street being made traffic-free improved their experience of the street.

In relation to a traffic-free arrangement for Parliament Street, 87% of respondents were in favour with a further 7% stating that they would prefer the street being reduced down to one lane.
