I think we would all prefer if we didn’t have the Covid pass – Varadkar

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has stated that he would prefer if the Digital Covid-19 Certificate was not used but added that it was necessary due to the present situation of the virus.

The government had originally intended to remove the Covid-19 pass by October 22nd but now it has been extended until at least February.

While speaking to the Irish Examiner, Varadkar stated, “I think all of us would prefer if we didn’t have to have the pass. I like most people go towards civil liberties. I’d much rather you didn’t have to have this pass system at all,”.

He added, “I much rather if it was gone by that we had hoped to be gone by now. But, you know, the scientific evidence, the advice from the public health team, is very clear. This will help us to reduce the transmission of the virus,”.

He said that if we were not facing a public health emergency, then the vaccine pass would not be required anymore “but we are not in normal times”.

Meanwhile, Varadkar has ruled out the notion of a temporary reduction in fuel taxes as costs significantly increase as we edge closer to the winter.

“We are not considering a temporary reduction in fuel, that is not the correct approach,”.
