Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan has expressed optimism in the idea that enough will be achieved to avoid any restrictions from being reintroduced.
Holohan’s comments came as Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan was asked if Covid-19 restrictions could be reintroduced.
Responding to the question, Ryan stated, “I don’t think they will be. We discussed that last night – neither Tony Holohan nor anyone else in the room felt that would be the appropriate response,”.
He also spoke about personal responsibility and that people need to be aware of the fact that the virus is still out there at scale and that it’s best to put simple measures in place.
Despite NPHET’s concerns about the recent surge in Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations, Holohan agreed with Minister Ryan and stated that we don’t want to see Covid-19 restrictions in the run-up to Christmas.
Holohan also urged people to go back to basic measures such as hand washing and mask-wearing while also asking people to conduct personal risk assessments before engaging in certain activities.
