Wayne Couzens lodges appeal against whole-life sentence for Sarah Everard murder

Former police officer Wayne Couzens has lodged an appeal against a whole-life sentence that he was handed for the abduction, rape and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard.

Sentenced back in September, the Metropolitan Police firearms officer used his warrant card and handcuffs to commit a false arrest of the 33-year-old marketing executive, using Covid-19 lockdown restrictions as a reason for the arrest.

It’s understood that Couzens had been planning the attack for at least one month before abducting Everard as she walked home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London on the 3rd of March.

The 48-year-old’s whole-life sentence is the first to be imposed for a single murder of an adult that wasn’t committed in the course of a terror attack.

Upon sentencing, Justice Fulford stated that the case in which a serving officer abused his position was so exceptional that it warranted a whole-life sentence, meaning Couzens will never be freed.

According to an official from the Court of Appeal, an application in relation to appealing against Couzens’ life sentence has been lodged.
