Calls for four-day working week in Ireland from Irish Congress of Trade Unions

Incoming president of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions Kevin Callinan has called for a four-day working week to be introduced by the trade union sector for Ireland.

With support for a four-day working week continuing to grow across the country, Callinan said that he wishes to see businesses and governments support the four-day week pilot programmes in both the private and public sectors.

He stated that trade unions should “lead advocacy efforts for expanded access to remote, blended and hybrid working post-pandemic, alongside greater remote working protections”.

The four-day week has been obtaining support to place a greater emphasis on the work/life balance of employees as the notion of a five-day working week being too excessive grows in popularity.

Four-Day Week Ireland, which campaigned for the idea to be introduced in Ireland, has developed a pilot programme that will assist organisations in exploring flexible working.

Tánaiaste Leo Varadkar spoke on the subject back in June where he stated, “It’s too early to say whether a four-day working week could work in Ireland. The idea is ambitious, to achieve the same outcomes and productivity, for the same pay with 20% fewer hours worked.”

He added that he could see potential in certain sectors but not all, particularly health, education and manufacturing.
